Blue Engineering: Optional seminar for all.

Sign up now!

Dear fellow students,

In the coming semester we will offer the optional seminar Blue Engineering. This course is special because it is organized by students for students and focuses on the joint development of questions and new perspectives. This means that every student from every department can register for this seminar. This course is designed to be cross-departmental in order to offer a holistic view. It is scheduled to take place on Tuesdays from 16.00 - 19.00.

Registration is initially via the EMIL room https://emil.haw-hamburg.de/course/search.php?search=blue+engineering.

The registration key is: BESOSE2020

Please register by 7th January. So that we can estimate the completion of the course promptly.

(If you have already taken a course in the above mentioned period and would prefer to change, please do not hesitate to contact us).

To the point:

Why Blue Engineering?

In our course, we want to look beyond the technical aspects and deal with social responsibilities, which unfortunately are far too seldom a topic of study. Among other things we want to deal with the following questions:

How must science function so that it can fulfil its task - the further development of mankind?

What are the topics that urgently need to be worked on?

What about the interplay between special fields and a holistic view?

Where do the resources come from and under what conditions are they obtained?

Science is about understanding what drives the world to free itself from being at the mercy of nature, with the aim of solving the problems of humanity, improving the lives of people.

Diagnostic methods and analytical equipment enable us to understand diseases and develop cures that further increase life expectancy.

Automation relieves us of many tasks. What once had to be laboriously produced by hand now comes for us in abundance from factories.

The Internet has connected people in ways that were previously unthinkable. Long journeys were necessary to transport letters, now almost anyone can talk, exchange and communicate with almost anyone else.

Obviously these developments have a great impact on society and can change the way we live together. Science does not stand for itself, because we are also part of the society on which it has an impact. These developments are not a natural process, but man-made. And so it is people who decide what the next steps are. We as the executors of this process must be clear about the purpose for which we want to research and work.

We invite you to join us in asking these questions. So we can learn together.
