info about the hardship fonds

Dear students,

The re-registration period runs until 15 August.

The full semester fee for enrolment in the winter semester 2022/23 is € 340.40.

Once again, we do not have any information on the refund of the approximately 64 € due to the 9-Euro Ticket. Please contact the HAW directly if you have any questions: 9 Euro Ticket

Instead, we would like to give you some information about the refund of the ticket via the semester ticket hardship fund:

With your re-registration you always automatically receive the semester ticket, which is valid in the majority of the HVV (Ringe A - E). In principle, it is not possible to do without this ticket as it is only that cheap beacuse we agreed with the HVV to take all the tickets every semster. You can find more information here

However, if paying for the semester ticket is a particular hardship for you, or if you cannot use the ticket because you are planning a semester abroad, for example, there are certain guidelines that allow you to have the cost of the ticket reimbursed.

In order to be reimbursed, you must have the ticket deleted from your chip card, which means that you will not actually have a ticket for the semester in question. The hardship fund does not help you pay for the ticket.

What funds are used to finance the refund?
With your semester fee, you pay an amount into the so-called "semester ticket hardship fund". At HAW, this is 4.50 € per semester. The refunds are financed from this money in the sense of a solidarity principle.

How do I know if I can get my ticket refunded and how does it work?
You do not apply for a refund from us, but from the appropriate office in the "Studierendenwerk" https://www.stwhh.de/en/

You can find out exactly how this works, which forms you need to submit and what the reasons for reimbursement are, as well as the online application form: here

What are the deadlines?
For HAW students, the deadlines for applying for a refund are:

28/29 February for the summer semester.
31 August for the winter semester

As soon as you have received a positive refund notification from the Studierendenwerk, you will be asked to have your semester ticket deleted from your student ID within a certain period of time. You can do this at the chip card office (Stiftstraße 69). You will receive a confirmation of the successful deletion from the chip card office, which you must forward to the Studierendenwerk.

If you miss this new deadline for deleting the ticket on your semester ID card, your original entitlement to a refund will expire.

Important for students who are not in Hamburg: You can also send the chip card by post to the chip card office and request that it be deleted.

If your application is rejected, you have one month to file an appeal with the Studierendenwerk.

Some important information about the refund:

Unfortunately, the same mistakes often happen when applying, which we would like to point out separately at this point:

Refund in case of exmatriculation:
If you are exmatriculated during the current semester, you have the option of having your ticket partly refunded, depending on the time of the application. You have to apply for this pro-rata refund directly at the S-Bahn Hamburg:

Hühnerposten 1 (staircase B, 6th floor)
20097 Hamburg
Monday - Thursday: 8 am - 4 pm
Friday: 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Before you can apply for a refund there, you must have your ticket cancelled on the card. You can do this at the chip card office. You will need a copy of your exmatriculation certificate and your student ID.

In this case, please do not apply for a refund from the Hardship Fund, as this would waste valuable time. The amount of the refund depends on the date of the application to the S-Bahn Hamburg!

Application for reimbursement despite missing documents:
It often happens that the deadline for submitting your application is just around the corner, but you do not yet have all the documents together, for example, because the final confirmation for the internship or the desired workplace for your thesis at your favourite company is still outstanding. In such a case, please make a precautionary application still in good time. You can withdraw your application at any time as long as you have not yet cancelled your chip card. If in doubt, contact the responsible office (before the deadline!) by e-mail or post and explain your situation:
